Bagley Public Art Project Manager HNTB Corporation

CALL TO ARTISTS - REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS Public Art for the Bagley Street Pedestrian Bridge, Detroit, Michigan
Budget:  $50,000 - $100,000
Eligibility:  Artists who are current residents of Michigan.
Deadline:  December 1, 2008

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) invites artists to submit qualifications to create work especially for the award-winning Bagley Street Pedestrian Bridge, Detroit, Michigan that connects the east and west sides of Mexicantown across I-75 and I-96. When completed, the bridge will be used by local residents, particularly during festivals and special events.

International visitors will also frequent the site because the new Detroit Mexicantown International Welcome Center nearby is a first stop for travelers after the border crossing from Canada.

Artists are sought to create work for two locations in a public gathering place on the bridge's East Apron. Potential media include tile, mosaic, painting or other durable and permanent mediums for an outdoor wall, and sculptural works on bases or pedestals, or tile- or mosaic-covered concrete cubes that function as tables for a seating area. $50,000 is presently available for artwork and MDOT is seeking additional funding sources and contributions.

The Call for Artists illustrating the bridge and locations for artwork and detailing the project and its timeline, committee composition, and application instructions, can be found online here.
Request for Qualifications (RFQ). English- and Spanish-language versions of the RFQ are available online and printed copies can be picked up at the Detroit Mexicantown International Welcome Center, 2835 Bagley Street, which is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Applications must be delivered no later than 5 pm CST on December 1, 2008 to the following address:

ATTN: Bagley Pedestrian Bridge Application Regina Flanagan, Bagley Public Art Project Manager HNTB Corporation 7900 International Drive, Suite 600 Minneapolis, MN 55425-8910
