Oakland County Enterprise GIS Programs & Services

GIS Training Classes and Schedules

Oakland County Enterprise GIS offers instructor-led training for representatives from a County agency or a local unit of government.

All classes are conducted in the Oakland County Information Technology Training Rooms. A student guide is provided for instruction purposes and becomes the property of the student at the conclusion of the class.   A maximum of 16 students per class is allowed to ensure that the students receive the individual attention they deserve. Students are provided with their own PC, making hands-on experience a priority.

Fundamentals of GIS

This is an introductory half-day course that covers fundamental concepts of GIS.  The class is designed for those with little or no knowledge of GIS.  Some of the topics covered include: 

  • Type GIS data
  • Basic map navigation
  • GIS organizational issues
  • Introduction to spatial analysis
  • Overview of GIS efforts in Oakland County

2012 Schedule:

This class is generally taught every third month on the third Wednesday of the month from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon:

  • April 18, 2012
  • July 18, 2012
  • October 17, 2012

Basics of ArcGIS

This is a full day course.  Prospective students should have a thorough understanding of the fundamental GIS concepts presented in the introductory Fundamentals of GIS class. The class will cover basic GIS functionality of ArcMap and ArcCatalog, including: 

  • GIS data manipulation
  • GIS data formats (shapefiles, geodatabase, etc.)
  • Map generation
  • Working with spatial and non-spatial data

2012 Schedule:

This class is generally taught every third month on the third or fourth Wednesday of the month from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.:

  • May 16, 2012
  • August 15, 2012
  • November 21, 2012

GIS Applied

This is a full day course that covers intermediate level concepts of GIS. Prospective students should have a thorough understanding of the GIS concepts presented in the introductory Fundamentals of GIS and Basics of ArcGIS classes.  Some of the topics covered include:

  • Building Geodatabases
  • Data Editing
  • Geocoding Concepts
  • Spatial Analysis and Geoprocessing
  • Creating and Editing Metadata

Location and Registration

If you are a representative from a County agency or a local unit of government and want to register for a course, please complete the Training Registration Form or contact Information Technology at (248) 858-0828.  You can also inquire about other IT trainings offered by the County at this number.

Submit your completed and signed Training Registration Form (Adobe Acrobat, file size 34k)  to the IT Reception Desk or fax to (248) 858-1006.  You will receive a confirmation email verifying that your seat is confirmed. If you do not receive a confirmation email before the date of your requested class, please contact training@oakgov.com or call (248) 858-0810 to make sure that your registration form was received.
