Welcome to MSU Extension-Oakland County

MSU Extension has a statewide network that serves all 83 Michigan counties.  Extension is charged with understanding the issues, challenges and opportunities of each county and its unique communities.  We work in partnership with other local organizations and agencies to plan and implement research-based educational programming that addresses the issues and challenges and takes advantage of the opportunities.

Nearly 30 academic departments and eight Michigan State University colleges work directly with Extension to provide our staff with the information they need to help people improve their lives, homes, businesses, families and communities.  Our staff translates university research into educational programs that help families, individuals, entrepreneurs and community leaders apply that knowledge to a variety of life issues.

Please explore our web site and let us know your suggestions and how we can assist you!

Dandelions in lawnMay Landscape Tip

As spring progresses and our lawns begin to look their best, broadleaf weeds in lawns become a concern for many homeowners.  Generally speaking, a weed is a "plant out of place".  Many of us don't mind the occasional sunny appearance of a dandelion or the delicate purple blooms of wild violets, but there are those of us that are ready to attack these lawn "invaders" with a vengeance.

The weeds in our lawns actually reflect the condition of the lawn.  Plants are opportunistic and the type of weeds you have actually tell you something about what is going on with that site such as moisture, shade, compaction or pH.  To determine the type of weeds in your lawn, conditions that favor their growth and controls, check out the MSU Turf Weeds web site.
