Oakland County Historic Preservation Program

Historic Preservation is a necessary action taken to uphold the links to our past, to maintain our history for the future, to enhance our quality of life, to provide constant economic viability now and in the future, and to ensure the ongoing education of past success, struggle and ambition by identifying and protecting what is significant to our history in building, structure and place.

Our Mission is...

"Promote the preservation and enhancement of Oakland County’s historical and cultural resources through the preparation and distribution of information and products that encourage sustainable economic growth, development, and redevelopment."

Historic Preservation Goals in Oakland County

  • Increase public knowledge for the county’s historic resources and the cultural, social and economic benefits related to preservation.
  • Help stop the deterioration and disinvestment in the county’s older communities by promoting revitalization and economic development through historic preservation.
  • Promote effective land use planning and development practices that incorporate historic preservation planning as a technique for retaining rural character, open space and agricultural lands.
  • Help preserve and protect the county’s historic resources through the use of historic preservation plans and related ordinances.
  • Fully survey and document the county’s historic resources for effective and equitable planning and to prevent irreversible losses.
