Oakland-Macomb Interceptor (OMI) Rehabilitation

As part of the recent settlement of litigation between the Detroit Water & Sewerage Department (DWSD) and Oakland, Macomb and Wayne Counties, Oakland and Macomb Counties will be taking over jurisdiction of the Oakland Arm, Avon Arm and Edison Corridor Interceptors. The Edison Corridor Interceptor provides service to both Oakland and Macomb Counties and connects both the Romeo Arm Interceptor and the Oakland Arm Interceptor to the Northeast Waste Water Pumping Station, located near the intersection of Eight Mile Road and Hoover Road. The sewer system has been established as an Inter-County Drain, under the provisions of Chapter 21 of the Drain Code of 1956, as amended, for the rehabilitation, and continued operation and maintenance of this system.

In February 2007, the Detroit Water & Sewerage Department (DWSD) authorized NTH Consultants, LTD. to perform an inspection of the Oakland Arm, Avon Arm and Edison Corridor Interceptors. The inspection and evaluation involved the use of closed circuit television (CCTV) and sonar inspection of approximately 112,979 lineal feet of sewer ranging in size from 36 inches to 12.75 feet in diameter. The individual reaches of sewer were ranked in regards to their current condition and anticipated life expectancy using the Pipeline Assessment Certification Program (PACP) system. The inspection identified multiple areas indicating distress and made recommendations for appropriate repairs. Philip Sanzica, P.E., Chief Engineer and Michael McMahon, P.E., Assistant Chief Engineer, are the Water Resources Office engineers assigned to the project. The estimated project cost of the repairs is $200,000,000. The project will take approximately 5 years to construct with the first phase commencing construction in the spring of 2010. The project will be financed through the Michigan Water Pollution Control Revolving Fund
